India is exploring the possibility of bringing Formula One back to the country, with the government considering 2028 as a potential year for the return of the Indian Grand Prix.
The Sports Ministry has formed a 10-member task force to assess the feasibility of hosting a Formula One race in India. The panel will be headed by NITI Aayog adviser Yugal Kishore Joshi and will include representatives from the Sports, Tourism and Commerce departments, Revenue authorities, the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, as well as motorsport bodies.
The task force will examine the regulatory and operational requirements involved in hosting an international Formula One event. Key areas under consideration include taxation, regulations, infrastructure and other logistical requirements associated with staging the race.
Beyond the feasibility of the event itself, the panel will also assess the potential economic impact of bringing Formula One back to India. This will include examining opportunities linked to tourism, investment and wider business activity that could result from hosting a major international motorsport event.
India previously hosted the Formula One Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The race was held from 2011 to 2013 before being dropped from the Formula One calendar.
The latest government initiative could mark the beginning of a fresh assessment of India’s readiness to host the global motorsport championship, with 2028 being considered as a potential target for the Indian Grand Prix.
