Meghalaya’s ₹732-Crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium Takes Shape, Set to Become India’s Largest

Meghalaya’s Mawkhanu Football Stadium is taking shape in New Shillong, with Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shri Wailadmiki Shylla recently inspecting the ongoing construction at Mawkhanu village in East Khasi Hills. The site is around 30 km from Shillong.

The ₹732-crore project will feature a 40,000-seat football-specific stadium and is being developed to FIFA and AFC standards. The state government has identified it as a key project in its efforts to strengthen Meghalaya’s football infrastructure and establish the state as the “Football Capital of India.”

The stadium is being constructed by KPC Projects Limited, with the tender agreement setting the completion timeline for the latter part of 2028. This means the venue will not be ready for Meghalaya’s hosting of the 39th National Games in 2027.

Beyond the main stadium, the wider complex is planned to include a natural-grass pitch, training infrastructure and a residential football academy that is expected to be operated by NorthEast United FC. Additional facilities will include a gymnasium, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, clubhouse, restaurants and public open spaces.

The project forms part of Meghalaya’s larger investment in sports infrastructure. The state has said more than 240 sports facilities are being constructed across different locations, while its 2025–26 budget outlined close to ₹1,900 crore in estimated sports spending over three years.

During his latest inspection, Minister Shylla reviewed the construction progress and interacted with the engineers and architects working on the project. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and confidence that the stadium would meet its scheduled timeline.

Once completed, the 40,000-capacity venue is expected to become India’s largest dedicated football stadium, providing Meghalaya with a facility capable of hosting major domestic and international football events.
