The Purbayan Arts Artists and Music Foundation (PAAMF), founded by renowned sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee, hosted a successful edition of UMANG – Celebration of Guru-Shishya Parampara at Ajivasan Hall, Juhu, bringing together acclaimed musicians, emerging talent, and music enthusiasts for an evening dedicated to India’s rich classical music heritage.
The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished names from the Indian classical music fraternity, including Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rishit Desikan, Aruna Sairam, Ambi Subramaniam, Shantanu Moitra, Darshan Doshi, Satyajit Talwalkar, Saylee Talwalkar, and Ustad Fazal Qureshi, among others.
The evening began with a ceremonial lamp lighting and devotional shlokas, followed by performances from the Mishra Brothers with Priyam Soni on tabla. Young artistes Pratham Chatterjee and Areen Talwalkar, along with Megha Rawoot accompanied by Shrutisheel Uddhav, showcased the next generation of classical musicians through engaging sitar and tabla presentations.
The second half featured a dynamic tabla solo by Ojas Adhiya, accompanied by Siddhesh Bicholkar on harmonium. Vocalist Gayatri Asokan concluded the scheduled performances with a soulful ghazal recital, joined by Ojas Adhiya, Deepak Marathe, Abshar Ahmed, and Shivang Mishra.
Adding a memorable finale to the evening, Purbayan Chatterjee surprised the audience with an unannounced performance, receiving an enthusiastic response from attendees.
Reflecting on the occasion, Chatterjee said, “the guru-shishya parampara is not a static relic of the past, but a living, breathing ecosystem proving that India’s classical roots are thriving with immense modern vitality.”
The event highlighted PAAMF’s continued commitment to preserving and promoting the guru-shishya tradition by providing a platform where established maestros and emerging artistes could share the stage, reinforcing the enduring legacy of Indian classical music.
