Sunita Kaur appointed President, Asia at Universal Music Publishing Group

Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has appointed Sunita Kaur as President, Asia, as the company continues to strengthen its presence across one of the world’s fastest-growing music markets.

The appointment was announced by Jody Gerson, Chairman and CEO of UMPG, to whom Kaur will report directly.

Based in Singapore, Kaur will oversee UMPG’s operations across Asia, focusing on driving long-term growth, strengthening the company’s presence in key markets, and supporting the development of a more connected and inclusive music publishing ecosystem. Her role will also include expanding opportunities, partnerships, and protections for songwriters and artists across the region.

Commenting on her appointment, Kaur said “Having worked across both music and technology throughout my career, joining UMPG feels like a natural and exciting next chapter as those worlds continue to come together in new and powerful ways. Asia is at a defining moment for the global music ecosystem, and I look forward to working with our teams across the region to drive the next phase of growth and opportunity for songwriters.”

Announcing the appointment, Gerson described Asia as one of the most important regions for the future of music publishing and highlighted Kaur’s extensive leadership experience across music, technology, and media.

Kaur brings more than two decades of experience across leading technology and media companies. Prior to joining UMPG, she spent nearly seven years at Spotify, where she held senior leadership roles including Vice President, Revenue, Asia Pacific, and Managing Director, Southeast Asia. She played a key role in driving commercial growth and supporting Spotify’s expansion across the region.

Her previous experience also includes leadership positions at Facebook, Microsoft, Forbes, Singapore Press Holdings, and Time Inc., providing her with extensive expertise across media, advertising, digital platforms, and commercial strategy.

The appointment comes as music publishing companies increasingly focus on Asia’s growing creator economy, expanding streaming market, and intellectual property opportunities, positioning the region as a key driver of future industry growth.
