Uber has announced a key marketing leadership transition for its India and South Asia operations, with Ameya Velankar stepping down from his role as Head of Marketing after over seven years with the company, and Arjun Kalra stepping in to lead the function for the region.
Velankar was a central figure in Uber’s marketing leadership during a transformative phase for the mobility sector, overseeing brand strategy, consumer engagement, and growth initiatives across India and South Asia. His tenure coincided with rapid shifts in urban mobility, increased digital adoption, and evolving consumer expectations from ride-hailing platforms.
While his next move has not been officially confirmed, industry sources indicate that Velankar is likely to join a new organisation soon.
Before joining Uber, Velankar had a brief stint at SC Johnson as Category Head. Prior to that, he spent over seven years at Marico, working across brand and category roles. He began his career with RPG Enterprises, gaining early experience in marketing and business operations. He is an alumnus of Management Development Institute, where he completed his PGDM in Sales and Marketing.
Taking over the mandate, Arjun Kalra has been appointed Head of Marketing for India & South Asia at Uber. In this role, Kalra will lead the company’s overall marketing strategy and execution across the region, with a focus on strengthening brand positioning, deepening consumer engagement, and driving high-impact growth initiatives.
Kalra will also be part of Uber’s APAC Marketing leadership team and the India & South Asia (INSA) leadership group, underlining the strategic importance of the region for the company.
Sharing the update on LinkedIn, Arjun Kalra wrote, “Excited to share my new ride. Last month, I stepped into a new role leading Marketing for Uber in India & South Asia. Uber isn’t just an app, it’s how our cities move every single day… chaotic, dynamic, unpredictable, and full of opportunity.” He added that he looks forward to working with teams across India and globally to build one of the most trusted and loved mobility brands in the region.
Kalra brings extensive experience across brand, digital, and growth marketing, having worked with leading consumer and technology-driven organisations prior to this role.
This leadership transition marks the next phase in Uber’s marketing journey in India and South Asia, as the company continues to evolve its brand and consumer connect in one of its most dynamic global markets.
