The Jaipur Literature Festival 2026 offered a deeply reflective literary moment with the ceremonial launch of The Unbecoming by author Kartikeya Vajpai, presented as part of the festival’s First Edition series. Held against the regal backdrop of Surya Mahal, the session drew an engaged audience for an introspective conversation around identity, purpose, and the pursuit of inner liberation through presence and awareness.
The book was unveiled by the Honourable Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Vice President of India, alongside Sanjay K. Roy, Festival Producer and Managing Director, Teamwork Arts. The unveiling was further marked by the presence of the author and panelists, giving the occasion both prestige and symbolic significance.
Rooted in Eastern philosophical thought and set in the high-pressure world of professional cricket, The Unbecoming explores what it means to define perfection in action and reimagine success through that pursuit. The narrative reflects on themes of flow, impermanence, courage, and the freedom required to break away from societal expectations and established roles.
The session featured an in-depth conversation with the author, Kartikeya Vajpai, in dialogue with veteran journalist and media leader Sanjay Pugalia, CEO, AMG Media Network. The discussion was moderated by Milee Ashwarya, Publisher, Adult Publishing Group, Penguin Random House India, who steered the conversation toward the intersections of literature and lived experience—offering an insightful lens on navigating professional uncertainty and personal clarity.
Reflecting on the core theme of the book, Vajpai said, “The Unbecoming transcends the notion of abandoning success; it invites us to explore our essence beyond the confines of accomplishment. This journey encourages us to detach from the identities and roles we cling to, allowing us to reconnect with our purpose through mindfulness, awareness, and service to others. Often, it is in relinquishing the pursuit of becoming and embracing ‘The Unbecoming’ that we discover our true existence.”
Drawing from his decades-long journey in Indian media, Pugalia spoke about leadership beyond designations, highlighting integrity, adaptability, and the willingness to embrace uncertainty as essential values for sustaining meaningful public careers.
Pugalia also emphasised the book’s resonance for younger audiences, particularly Generation Z, noting that its blend of cricket and spirituality offers a powerful framework for today’s fast-evolving world. He reflected that the book captures life’s rhythms, ways of dealing with failure, and the importance of recognising one’s inner energy and purpose—offering both inspiration and space for readers to reflect on questions relevant to their time.
The session concluded with the idea of The Unbecoming as a universal meditation rather than a singular narrative—one that transcends professions and generations. The unveiling emerged as one of the festival’s most introspective moments, reinforcing the Jaipur Literature Festival’s continued role as a platform where literature opens doors to deeper self-inquiry and enduring dialogue.
