Taj Group to develop Meghalaya’s biggest luxury resort at Umiam Lake with ₹330 crore investment

The Taj Group is set to significantly elevate Meghalaya’s hospitality and tourism landscape with the development of its largest luxury resort in the state — Taj Umiam Resort & Spa. Envisioned as a defining landmark for high-end tourism, the upcoming flagship five-star property is being developed on the tranquil shores of Umiam Lake, one of the region’s most picturesque natural attractions.

Backed by an estimated investment of approximately ₹330 crore, the project marks the single-largest hospitality investment in Meghalaya to date. The development has been welcomed by the state leadership as a transformative step for local tourism. Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, attended the land-handover ceremony, formally marking the commencement of construction. Once completed, the property will become the first flagship Taj hotel in the state.

Strategically located around 17 km from Shillong and approximately 14 km from Umroi Airport, the Taj Umiam Resort & Spa is poised to strengthen regional connectivity while positioning Meghalaya as a premium leisure destination. The resort is expected to play a pivotal role in a broader vision to transform Umiam and its surrounding areas into a high-value travel hub, combining luxury hospitality with the state’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism offerings.

The development underscores Meghalaya’s growing momentum in tourism-led economic growth, with a focus on attracting global travellers, generating employment, and fostering sustainable hospitality infrastructure across the state.
