Kerala Literature Festival 2026 to Bring Together 400 Global Voices at Kozhikode Beach

The Kerala Literature Festival (KLF), Asia’s largest and the world’s most attended literary festival, is set to return with its ninth edition from January 22 to 25, 2026. Held along the scenic Kozhikode beachfront—recently recognised as India’s first UNESCO City of Literature—the festival promises four immersive days of ideas, performances, and cross-cultural conversations.

Since its inception in 2016, KLF has grown into one of India’s most anticipated cultural gatherings, blending literature, art, cinema, music, and performance in an open and inclusive public space. The previous edition drew over 650,000 visitors and featured more than 600 speakers, reinforcing its stature as a global meeting point for creative and intellectual exchange.

A Global Line-Up for 2026

The 2026 edition aims to expand this legacy even further with more than 400 speakers and 250 sessions spread across seven parallel tracks. With ten sessions per track each day and participation from 15 countries, the programme will unfold across genres and disciplines, transforming Kozhikode into a bustling city of ideas.

This year’s confirmed speaker list includes an impressive mix of Nobel Laureates, Booker Prize winners, historians, scientists, philosophers, activists, filmmakers, and artists. Names such as Abdulrazak Gurnah, Olga Tokarczuk, Abhijit Banerjee, Olympian Ben Johnson, Indra Nooyi, Cheyenne Olivier, Gabriela Ybarra, Arvind Subramanian, Peggy Mohan, Shobhaa De, Amish Tripathi, Piyush Mishra, Helen Molesworth, Banu Mushtaq, and Deepa Bhasthi headline the roster.

“KLF has evolved into a platform where literature and art coexist with science, cinema, and social thought. Every year, it becomes a meeting point for some of the most creative and courageous minds from around the world. The 2026 edition will continue this journey by deepening the exchange of ideas and celebrating cultural diversity,” said Ravi Deecee, Chief Facilitator, Kerala Literature Festival.

Germany Announced as Guest Nation

Germany has been named the Guest Nation for KLF 2026 and will bring a vibrant cultural programme to Kozhikode.

“Germany shares a close cultural relationship with Kerala, and we are excited to reaffirm this relationship through our programming for Kerala Literature Festival. As the Guest Nation of KLF 2026, the German participation will feature a dedicated pavilion, a writing residency in Vagamon for German writers as well as a Creative Writing Workshop for young creatives writing in Malayalam. Together with our partners, the German Consulate in Bangalore and the Goethe-Zentrum in Trivandrum, we will bring German authors and artists to the warm sands of Kozhikode beach,” said Dr. Michael Heinst, Director of Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore. “

The German pavilion will showcase the country’s contemporary literature, creative industries, and artistic practices. A large-scale light installation on Kozhikode beach will serve as the visual centrepiece of the nation’s participation, emphasising KLF’s core spirit of collaboration. Curated sessions, exhibitions, and performances will facilitate dialogue on literature, translation, artistic expression, and shared cultural values.

This participation follows last year’s successful showcase by France, further elevating KLF’s global cultural position.

A Festival of Literature, Culture, and Performance

True to its tradition of blending literature with live cultural programming, KLF 2026 will feature fusion nights, concerts, theatre, and traditional as well as contemporary art showcases each evening. The beachfront venue will transform into a lively cultural hub, offering attendees an engaging mix of discussions by day and performances by night.

“KLF has always stood for accessibility and openness. It allows conversations that connect people across languages, disciplines, and borders, reinforcing Kerala’s place on the global cultural map,” Deecee added.

As preparations gain momentum, Kozhikode gears up to welcome voices and audiences from across the world. For four days in January, Kerala Literature Festival 2026 will once again turn the city into a vibrant celebration of creativity, diversity, and shared human stories.
