In an exclusive conversation with EVENTFAQS Media, Sahil opens up about his journey, his passion for bringing backstage dancers into the limelight, and his vision for the future of dance in India.

You’ve built a name in dance through weddings, corporate shows, and large-scale events. How did your journey in the industry begin, and in what ways has it shaped your perspective on the dance world?

I started my journey as a student, went on to do reality shows like Boogie Woogie, then worked as an assistant choreographer in the Bollywood industry. Eventually, I decided to step into the world of commercial events and weddings, which truly shaped my path. From teaching small batches to curating large wedding productions, corporate shows, and stage acts, each step has been a learning experience.

This journey has shown me that dance is not just about steps — it’s about storytelling, emotion, and creating memories for people. Working in weddings especially taught me the power of personalization, while large-scale events taught me discipline, scale, and precision. Together, they’ve shaped my belief that dance is both an art and an emotion that connects with people beyond language or culture.

You’ve recently started highlighting the contribution of backstage dancers who are often the unsung heroes of a performance. What made you decide it was time to pull them into the spotlight, and what kind of impact do you hope this creates?

For years, I saw how much effort my team and backstage dancers put in — from endless rehearsals to handling props, entries, and last-minute changes. Yet, they rarely got the recognition they deserved. Yes, of course, that’s an industry fact — backstage artists, dancers, choreographers, and technicians often get less recognition. But now the era is changing with multiple platforms, social media, and award functions coming up.

It may not happen overnight, but slowly and surely, the recognition will get better for all of us. By pulling backstage dancers, choreographers, and technicians into the spotlight, I hope it builds respect for the craft and inspires young dancers to value teamwork as much as solo stardom. It’s my way of reminding the industry that no performance shines without its support system.

Over the years, you’ve witnessed the dance scene evolve in many ways. What have been the most significant shifts in performance styles, audience expectations, and opportunities for dancers?

When I started, performances were more about full-length choreographies and stage presence. Today, the demand is diverse — from traditional pieces to high-energy fusions, cinematic entries, and even short viral reels. Audiences and clients now want everything larger than life.

When it comes to choreography or entries, they expect it to look like a big gig — something on the scale of IIFA or other television award shows. The positive side is that this clarity helps us craft shows in a far more creative way.

Opportunities have also multiplied: earlier it was mostly stage shows or films, but now weddings, corporate launches, international gigs, and social media have opened new doors for dancers. The shift has made the industry more dynamic and competitive, but also full of possibilities.

With Gen-Z and social media driving a ‘reel-first’ culture, how have platforms like Instagram changed the way dancers work — and how do you adapt your choreography for a 30-second reel versus a grand wedding stage while keeping your signature style?

Social media has completely changed how dancers create and share. A 30-second reel requires crispness, instant impact, and moves that capture attention quickly. On the other hand, a wedding stage performance is about building drama, storytelling, and engaging a live audience.

The key is to adapt while keeping my signature style intact — ensuring even in 30 seconds, the energy and originality remain the same. And yes, Gen-Z has helped us better understand and visualize client requirements — they’re pretty clear about what they want to make events more memorable.

Social media also helps us market and brand ourselves, where everyone can do a kind of “window shopping” and choose the right vendor. I see reels as a window to showcase snippets of creativity that often lead to bigger opportunities on stage.

Looking ahead, how do you envision the future of dance in India, and what key changes do you believe are necessary to take the industry to the next level?

The future of dance in India is incredibly bright. With global exposure, collaborations, and rising respect for performers, we’re moving towards making dance a sustainable career option. I truly envision the commercial artistic industry becoming much larger, with multiple opportunities and good money for artists in the future.

People will never stop attending gigs, weddings, and special celebrations — and for that, we will always need different types of artists to entertain and showcase their talent. Who knows, one day this could even grow into a fully organized sector.

When it comes to changes, the first step is that artists should never work for free — talent must be valued. Event companies and planners are the biggest support systems, and they can help turn this industry into an even bigger opportunity. And last but not least, audiences should respect and value the true cost of art, because that’s what keeps the entire ecosystem thriving.

With his award-winning creativity, cinematic vision, and commitment to raising the profile of both performers and backstage talent, Sahil Sah is not just choreographing dances — he’s shaping the future of performance as a collective art form.
