Maharashtra Launches Convention Bureau to Propel India as a Global MICE Destination

In a major move to position India as a global hub for business events, the Government of Maharashtra has announced the launch of the Maharashtra Convention Bureau (MCB), the country’s first state-led initiative dedicated to promoting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. The announcement was made at IMEX Frankfurt, one of the world’s leading MICE industry tradeshows.

Headquartered in Mumbai, MCB will focus on attracting international conventions, exhibitions, and business events to Maharashtra. The initiative is part of the Maharashtra Tourism Policy 2024 and aims to strengthen the state’s visitor economy by capitalizing on its reputation as a financial and tourism hotspot.

Government representatives at IMEX included Shri Indranil Naik, Minister of State for Tourism and other portfolios, Shri Atul Patne, IAS, Principal Secretary (Tourism), Shri Santosh Rokade, Deputy Secretary, and Dr. B.N. Patil, IAS, Director, Directorate of Tourism.

Shri Indranil Naik, Minister of State for Tourism said, “Maharashtra has long been a leader in industry, education, and innovation—and with this new bureau, we are unlocking the full potential of the business events industry to amplify that leadership on a global stage. As Minister of State, I am proud to support this visionary step forward that will elevate Maharashtra as a premier destination not just for business, but for bold ideas and inclusive growth.”

The Bureau will work closely with international event organizers and local stakeholders—hotels, venues, and service providers—to simplify planning processes and enhance the visitor experience. Its focus cities include Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur, all equipped with world-class infrastructure.

Shri Atul Patne, IAS, said, “The establishment of the Maharashtra Convention Bureau is a watershed moment for our nation, state and Mumbai city’s global aspirations. We are excited to bring the world to Maharashtra and Mumbai – The Gateway to India.”

Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre (JWCC) is already leading the charge, having hosted global events like the G20 Sessions 2023 and Miss World Grand Finale 2024. Upcoming events include the International Baccalaureate Congress (2026), ICANN Annual Conference, and International Olympiad on Astronomy & Astrophysics (2025).

Dr. Senthil Gopinath, CEO of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), added, “The establishment of the Maharashtra Convention Bureau is a transformative milestone, not only for Maharashtra but for India’s entire MICE industry… Maharashtra is setting a benchmark for other states to follow.”

The launch of MCB comes at a time when India is gaining prominence in the global events space, marking a new chapter for Maharashtra and the country’s MICE tourism landscape.
