From Bollywood stages to weddings, Raju Balan’s choreography has captivated audiences worldwide. With over a decade of experience in the entertainment industry, he continues to set new standards of creativity, storytelling, and performance art. Known for his work in major Bollywood stage shows like Merchants of Bollywood, Taj Express, and Temptation World Tour with Shah Rukh Khan, Raju is a sought-after name in both the Bollywood and wedding choreography scenes. As part of the 11th edition of Entertainers Connect @ WOW Awards Asia 2025, EVENTFAQS Media spoke with Raju to explore his journey, process, and what’s next for him.
What does being a part of the 11th edition of Entertainers Connect mean to you? How do you see it leveling up your work and boosting your presence in the industry?
Being part of the 11th edition of Entertainers Connect is a true honour for me. It’s like a recognition of the years of hard work, dedication, and belief I’ve poured into this craft. More than just a platform, it’s an opportunity to connect with like-minded artists, exchange creative energy, and uplift each other. This experience will give me the chance to share my journey with a wider audience, expand my network, and collaborate with new, exciting talents—pushing my work into the next level of creative expression and visibility.
What inspired you to choose this path as your profession? And now that you’ve spent time in the industry, what shifts or positive differences have you witnessed over time?
Dance found me long before I knew it could be a profession. It all started with pure love—just me, music, and movement. Over time, that love transformed into a purpose, and I became determined to make dance my career. Being self-made, I’ve always been fuelled by passion, constantly evolving with the ever-changing rhythms of the industry. Over the years, I’ve seen a positive shift: there’s more respect for dancers and choreographers now. The industry has evolved with more platforms, better representation, and an openness to diverse styles and cultural blends. It’s truly heartwarming to see dance now being celebrated as an art form, not just entertainment.
How do you stay relevant and innovative in such a dynamic and evolving entertainment industry?
Staying relevant is all about staying a student of the craft. No matter how many years you’ve been in the game, the moment you stop learning, you stop growing. I constantly observe emerging trends, absorb new styles, and blend them with my own unique ideas. I trust my instincts, stay rooted in my culture, and let my creativity soar. I also draw inspiration from my spiritual connection with Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva, who have always helped me stay grounded and inspired during challenging times.
What’s next for you? Are there any specific projects, formats, or collaborations you’re aiming to explore?
I’m always dreaming bigger. Right now, I’m exploring the concept of storytelling through dance—something that merges cinematic visuals with soulful movement. I’m looking forward to collaborating across borders and genres, and I’m particularly interested in mentoring the next generation of dancers through curated workshops and shows. One exciting project I’m working on involves a fusion of mythology, music, and modern movement—a creative tribute to my spiritual roots and artistic journey.
What’s your go-to trick for winning over a tough crowd? Do you have a mantra or phrase that you say to yourself before every performance?
The energy you put out is always felt, and that’s my trick for winning over a tough crowd: being authentic. If you dance with honesty, the audience feels that connection. I always make sure to tune into the space, the music, and my own body. And before every performance, I take a moment to close my eyes and¯ say a small prayer to Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva, asking for strength and clarity. My mantra is simple yet powerful: “Dance like it’s your offering.” It’s something that grounds me before every performance.
What advice or message would you give to aspiring artists?
My advice is simple: stay true to your art and trust the process. Don’t rush or seek external validation. Success comes from dedication, discipline, and humility. Keep learning, stay grounded, and believe in something greater than yourself—whether it’s your intuition, your faith, or your purpose. The journey might not be easy, but it’s incredibly magical when your heart is truly in it.
