
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 10th International Day of Yoga celebrations at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar on 21 June 2024. Despite rainy weather, thousands gathered to participate in the yoga event, reflecting this year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society.” The serene beauty of Srinagar provided a perfect setting for the occasion.
Since 2015, the Prime Minister has led the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at various locations, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru and even the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the global growth of yoga since the first International Yoga Day in 2015, supported by 177 countries at the United Nations. He spoke about yoga’s role in enhancing individual health and fostering community harmony. “Yoga has become a part of daily life worldwide,” he noted, citing examples of yoga’s acceptance from Germany to Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Modi also discussed the rise of a “Yoga Economy,” with increasing demand for yoga tourism, retreats, and related products, creating new jobs and boosting local economies. He praised the people of Jammu & Kashmir for their enthusiastic participation, emphasizing yoga’s potential to promote the region’s cultural heritage and tourism.
As the event concluded, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that yoga will continue to inspire and bring people together globally. He encouraged everyone to integrate yoga into their daily lives for better health and well-being.
