The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation the Royal Opera of Madrid (Teatro Real), and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has brought flamenco to India. Eduardo Guerrero, a flamenco dancer, and choreographer who has already performed twice in the FLAMENCO REAL seasons at the Royal Opera of Madrid, delivered in India his show Faro, one of his most well-regarded works.
Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi accompanied the Ambassador of Spain, H.E. José María Ridao, and Ambassador Kumar Tuhin, Director of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to celebrate this event amidst a large audience of music enthusiasts.
Faro was created in 2017 for a tour in which Eduardo Guerrero performed at some of Spain’s most evocative lighthouses. A witness to storms and splendid dawns, to reunions and tragic farewells, to ghostly and luminous nights, to countless battles and magical celebrations, the lighthouse inspired Eduardo Guerrero’s dance, which suggests all these atmospheres with different flamenco palos and versions of the mythical songs that have inspired his choreographies.
Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State, External Affairs and Culture, said, “A variety of expressions was exhibited. India and Spain are wonderful partners in an artful way and wish to learn from each other and exist in harmony.”
H.E. José María Ridao, said, “We are extremely happy to have had the opportunity to introduce people to our culture by performing Flamenco for the Indian audience. India offers a marvellous experience of art to the common human heritage, and we would love to contribute to it.”
Director of Teator Real, said, “Teatro Real is extremely proud to be collaborating with India. It is a way to bring a little part of the Spanish culture and build a connection with India.”
